Useful information

What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a blue alga belonging to a class of blue-green, spiral-form unicellular algae. It is a microscopic alga that grows in fresh water, and has very ancient origins. Despite being in the class of blue algae, spirulina has a dark green colour, while its name comes from its spiral-like form.

The origin of Spirulina

Spirulina (arthrospira platensis) belongs to a class of blue-green, spiral-form unicellular algae. It grows in lakes and streams in at least 35 varieties. It mainly lives in alkaline fresh water, and a particularly robust. The alga forms helical and spiral-like filaments that are so microscopic that they are invisible to the naked eye. Spirulina alga has existed since the beginning of life on Earth, and thus has an extremely long history. It is one of the smallest and simplest forms of life on Earth, and has an important role in the food chain. This life form represents the first link in the food chain. Via photosynthesis, the alga transforms sunlight into substances essential nutrients for life. Our Spirulina is organic and comes from the province of Tamil Nadu, an unspoiled rural area in southern India, where it is grown without the use of pesticides and unnatural chemical fertilizers and away from sources of pollution.

Spirulina Properties

Spirulina is a fresh water microalga with a high nutritional value. Its dark green colouring comes from chlorophyll, while its bluish hue comes from a pigment named phycocyanin. Spirulina is a source of protein and high in iron. Iron contributes to normal cognitive function and to the normal function of the immune system. Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal oxygen transport in the body. Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and to the maintenance of normal bones. Folate contributes to normal blood formation and to normal homocysteine metabolism and Phosphorus contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.

Taste and texture

Our Spirulina comes from organic farming. Spirulina is usually found in a dry powder, tablets or capsule pills. Powdered spirulina has a dark green, blue-tinged colour. It has a particular taste, astringent and slightly fishy, though less so than other algae. This allows spirulina to be more easily integrated into a diet. It is crucial that spirulina is cold dried in order to preserve all of its nutrients.
