Its leaves rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and amino acids can be used as a food supplement to make up for nutritional deficiencies. For this reason it was named"crop of the month"for January 2018 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
According to theFAO, all parts of the Moringa tree, the bark, pods, leaves, seeds, tubers, roots and flowers, are edible.
The leaves can be consumed as fresh vegetables or dried and ground into powder. The plant also produces them during the dry season or in periods of drought, so it is an excellent source of vegetables when there is little other food available.
The pods are harvested while still green and eaten fresh or cooked. The seeds, from which oil is also obtained, can also be eaten raw, roasted or used in curries. Furthermore, they are also used to purify drinking water. Therefore, it has an economic, public health and environmental sustainability relevance also in this sense.
In animal husbandry, the leaves are also used as fodder for livestock, and local farmers usually introduce them into drought-affected agricultural areas. And its use has been described as a natural stimulator of plant growth, thus increasing crop yields. Finally, trees act as windbreaks and reduce soil erosion.
