Several factors have contributed to this new phenomenon, certainly including the pandemic and the greater awareness linked to climate change: we are talking about flexitarians.
Who am I and what does flexitarianism mean?
The root of the word is "flexi", which indicates something flexible, a non-rigid scheme: this is precisely the correct interpretation.
Unlike vegans, who do not allow the consumption of any product of animal origin for ethical and environmental reasons, flexitarians have a "softer" approach.
In a certain way similar to those who follow a plant-based diet, in fact, flexitarians mainly consume products of plant origin, without however demonizing or totally avoiding those animals.
Ok, so what can I eat if I follow flexitarianism?
In practice, a flexitarian is moved both by ethical reasons – of environmental impact and for the protection of animals – and by personal health reasons, and decides to always consume animal products, replacing them with vegetable ones.
It is therefore a question of having a substantially plant-based diet, where the few products of animal origin admitted are, as a rule, of high quality and purchased from ethical sources, controlled supply chains, small local businesses attentive to animal welfare.
A compromise, therefore, which is allowing many individuals to make their own contribution without a 360-degree food "sacrifice".
According to data from Unionfood, the watershed was precisely the first lockdown: the pandemic led people to want to consume more plant-based and healthy foods, cooked at home, giving up fast food and diets based on meat derivatives.
In fact, from 2020 compared to 2019 the consumption of fruit, vegetables, cereals and plant-based drinks would increased by 3.7% year on year.
In 2021, according to Gfk-Eurisko, 42% of Italians declared to have significantly increased their consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables along with whole grains. Well 39% said that vegetable drinks and vegetable meat substitutes have rightfully entered the weekly shopping list, becoming daily products on our tables.
