Dieta del gruppo sanguigno: cos’è e come funziona

Blood Type Diet: What It Is and How It Works

There blood type diet : a relatively young eating style, it began to be talked about in 1996 starting from the idea of an American naturopath, Peter D'Adamo. A public success, if you consider that his book “ Eat Right 4 Your Type ” has sold almost ten million copies worldwide.

Blood Type Diet: Where the Idea Comes From and the Basis

His idea is based on an evolutionary concept: on a biological level, the different blood groups – A, B, AB And 0 – would define different “micro-stages” in the evolution of the human species. Each of these stages corresponds, historically, to very different moments of human habits and customs, even at a food level .

For example, if it is established that group 0 is the most ancient, then it is easy to think that our ancestors who had that blood were essentially hunter-gatherers, accustomed to eating mainly meat and wild vegetables such as fruit and roots.

The other blood groups, which appeared later, are linked to eras in which, instead, man had already further evolved in his abilities and habits, arriving at cultivating and breeding, therefore consuming different foods from his predecessors.

What Each Blood Type Should Eat

Of course, we are no longer primitive and we have a wide range of foods to choose from every day. But what does an individual of each of the 4 blood types have to do to follow this diet?

Basically, by getting into character a little and taking the so-called “ paleo diet ” to the next level, I understand what evolutionary stage my blood is at!

Here are some indications, always according to D'Adamo:

  • Group 0, the oldest in fact, dates back to when man was purely carnivorous because he was a hunter. Yes, to meat and fish and ok to pure vegetables and tubers. No to overly processed foods, cereal and milk derivatives, and no also to legumes and foods containing too much sugar. Almost a ketogenic , therefore;
  • Group A, dates back to the time when man discovered agriculture and stopped hunting. Ok, therefore, to everything that is of vegetal origin: cereals, vegetables and fruit, seeds and grains, legumes, better instead not to overdo it with foods of animal origin, essentially a plant-based diet ;
  • Group B, when man begins to breed, he also understands how to transform the products derived from the presence of animals, such as milk and eggs, and begins to develop a more complex metabolism and digestive system. Ok, therefore, to dairy products and slightly more processed products, always with an eye to not overdoing it with sugars, preservatives and processing;
  • Group AB, the most recent and “evolved”, a summary of the previous ones, therefore individuals with this blood type are more inclined to be able to eat everything.

Bottom line: Is the blood type diet good for you?

The premise is that there is, in reality, no scientific evidence that what D'Adamo claims is correct.

It is true, however, that those who undertake this diet often feel better: why?

Simply because, in general, like any diet that aims to improve people's eating habits, the blood type diet is also based on universally correct principles, for example:

  • eat pure and not overly processed products;
  • limit industrial sugars and preservatives;
  • focus on the quality and seasonality of the foods put on the table etc.

Moderation and common sense – and not some “magic” trick or dietary diktat – bring the best results in the long run.
