Decluttering: what it is and why it is also good for the mind

We talked about how togo shopping without waste and about how positive awareness, i.e. mindfulness, is a correct approach to life. The decluttering is an excellent hook between these two concepts, because it brings together the desire to live in a minimal way with the desire to get rid of the superfluous even on an emotional level.

But what is decluttering and how to put it into practice today?

What is decluttering, less is more

Living in the midst of disorder and accumulating objects: this happens to many of us, either continuously or at a particular moment in our lives in which we feel more insecure and fragile for a thousand reasons.

They are both everyday phenomena that manifest a malaise, in fact: on the contrary, being able to tidy up your home, wardrobe or pantry, also means create space and order in your soul.

The so-called “decluttering” is based on this basic concept, an English term which literally means simply “tidying up”. It has become famous in recent years also thanks to the phenomenon of the Japanese "guru" Marie Kondo, with her famous method called KonMari.

But it's not just about simple tidying up.

Decluttering, practiced in a systematic way, becomes a true lifestyle: it is not a question of accumulating and arranging in a cyclical way, but of tidying up once and for all, and then not having to do it again, because living with "less" becomes the norm.

In fact, the approach is to live in a more minimal way, understand what we really need and keep only the essential, because often the superfluous only serves us as a mask or as the proverbial "Linus' blanket", to hide and shelter us from sorrows.

How to tidy up wardrobes and shoe racks, but also the fridge and pantry

Let's be clear, there's nothing wrong with collecting ceramic figurines or being passionate about shoes, so much so that you have over two dozen in your shoe rack. But it depends on how this makes you feel: is it a nice and positive pastime? Is it a way of expressing your style?

Or is it just accumulation for its own sake? Is it true that you never use those shoes and that the figurines pile up in the dust because you don't even pay attention to them?

In this second case, perhaps you should consider decluttering!

If when you open the wardrobe, clothes that you haven't worn for more than 1 year fall on you, or if you have so much "spare" food crammed in the pantry that the oldest packages have now expired, you are wasting money, space and energy.

Take a whole afternoon, wear comfortable clothes, arm yourself with large garbage bags and put on music you like: you're ready to get started.

So as not to panic, tackle one room at a time, starting from what seems simplest to you or what you know will give you the most satisfaction in the end: we assure you that the effort will pay off.

Don't put it off, start now and try to visualize how much serenity it will give you in the end, seeing:

  • spices neatly arranged on the kitchen shelf
  • the bookcase in the living room freed from old dusty magazines, with the volumes arranged by author or genre
  • the walk-in closet with all the clothes hanging perhaps in color shades
  • the bicycle that finds its place in the garage, without having to play Tetris every time to collect it

Don't you feel better already, just thinking about it?

And it is not a given that everything that is in excess for you should be thrown away, on the contrary, it could prove useful for other purposes.

Why decluttering is good for the environment and society

Ruined clothes and expired food, alas, will have to be thrown away: pay attention and differentiate correctly, opening and dividing packages made of different materials.

On the contrary, however, almost new clothes but which simply for you have gone out of fashion or no longer suit you, can be a great resource for those who are less fortunate: make sure they are clean and in good condition, then put them in the appropriate bags so that they are protected and take them to the collection points of charities in the area, there are many you can turn to to help.

The same goes forold textbooks that you no longer need or the volumes of that author that you have read and reread and have become bored with: give them to small neighborhood libraries or to the associations that send them to those places in the world where they are truly precious.

In addition to making this small contribution on a social level, thanks to declutteringyou will also be able to help the environment, because you will discover that it is possible to live better by having less, buying less and better, paying more attention to what we wear, what we furnish and clean the house with, and yes, also and above all what we put on the table.

Positive effects of decluttering on the psyche

Decluttering doesn't just mean making room in the wardrobe, then. It is a true philosophy of life, an approach to the essential, wanting to keep with us only what is really needed, and not only from the material.

The superfluous objects that we get rid of help us visualize the emotions and heavy emotional baggage that we carry inside, and that we can eliminate, also making space in our mind and heart.

On the one hand, order in the home also gives a sense of internal order: who doesn't feel at peace after having finished making a seasonal change in the wardrobe or freed up a garage full of old unused boxes?

On the other hand, we often invest some objects with an emotional value too: the gift from the ex-boyfriend, the box from the last move, the book from that terrible university exam or the clothes that no longer fit. All this can create stress because it triggers memories or associations of ideas that are still painful and delicate.

This is why, often, deciding to "throw everything away" can really be a panacea for your well-being and emotional health!
